Winter Fly Tying

This winter, tying has been very different than past winters. Usually, I tie a couple flies several hundred times over, thinking to myself, this has to be enough... Well, it never was. You wouldn't believe how many flies one person can lose. Simply put, guiding is adult day-care.
However, this winter has been completely different with the fly tying workshops at North 40 here in Coeur d’Alene. I have had the opportunity to sit and learn some amazing techniques from some good, and not so good, tiers. The heartfelt friendships that I have acquired are incredible, and the progress that I am seeing in our returning tiers is stunning. It’s unbelievable how fast and how much one can learn from some of our guest tiers, who have spent a majority of their life tying. The little tricks and techniques used to make tying bugs easier have helped my game immensely, and have made tying bugs even more enjoyable than it was only a few weeks ago. From the most experienced to the novice, it’s got something for everyone. Our workshops, which are held every Saturday morning from 9-12, are also a great place to meet fellow anglers and arrange an outing. I've heard several great fishing stories from the people I’ve meet at the workshop.
If you have ever had the inclination to tie a fly, feel free to swing into the Coeur d’Alene North 40 on Saturday mornings, and grab a doughnut and some coffee on us. If you have a vise and some tying tools, I suggest bringing them. If not, that’s ok too, we have several vises we can set you up with to get you started. I look forward to watching the progress of our tiers and witnessing some of these bugs take flight in the coming months. I hope to see you Saturday, and you never know, sometimes the doughnuts even have bacon on them...
