Spey Casting for Single Handers

There are lots of trout fisherman who are still baffled by all the talk of two handed spey casting applications for trout fishing.  The long rods seem both foreign and too long for small to mid-sized trout waters.  While there are now plenty of two hand rod choices between 10 and 11’, they still seem long.

A fly rod is a fly rod.  It does not matter if its 7’6" or 15’.  It is still made to cast your fly line. How you cast it and what type of line you choose to match it with can vary tremendously.  Most anglers fail to realize how much they can benefit from learning to spey cast with their single hand rods.  Your standard 9’ 5wt trout rod with a matching weight forward line can utilize spey casting techniques.  Better yet, with some of the new specialized fly lines available, it can become a terrific spey casting tool.

Why would a trout angler want to spey cast?  Who has not been caught up in the bushes on their back cast?  Who has not been in a situation where a standard roll cast could not deliver the fly where it needed to go?  We’ve all been there and chances are we’ll be there again, but there are solutions to reduce the frequency of those unfortunate situations.

Spey casting allows the angler to make a powerful forward cast with no backcast.  That’s helpful.  Spey casting allows anglers to change the direction of their cast without any backcasting.  That’s incredibly efficient.  Who has not put down a rising fish with their false casting? Spey casting allows the delivery of a fly without false casting over potential fish or fish holding water.  That’s stealthy.  Spey casting with dries?  Absolutely.  With streamers?  Yep.  With nymph rigs?  Any time.
