Secret Benefits to Working in a Fly Shop

Since I was a child, I have always loved fishing, especially fly fishing. I can remember when I was in elementary school, I would daydream of becoming an ice cream man, or working in a fly shop. Luckily, I made the better choice... I think. At the age of 16, I started working summers in different fly shops within the Yellowstone area. Now, I have worked in 5 different fly shops and enjoyed every minute of it. However, over these years, I have noticed a few benefits that aren't mentioned during the interview.

Lasting Bonds formed in the Fly Shop

The fly shop has a very relaxed atmosphere, and is an awesome place to meet fun people with common interests and life styles. It's a place where you can share some great tips for hunting, fishing, or anything else, really. Whether the person is a co-worker or a customer, I have gained some awesome fishing/hunting partners over the years through simple fly shop conversation. Free freshly brewed coffee is also a great way to start off any new relationship.

Tricks of the Trade Picked up in the Fly Shop

Anyone who says he knows everything about fishing techniques, or an area, is a fool. There is always something new to learn about fly tying or fly fishing, whether it's new techniques, ties or ways to fish specific rivers and lakes. I am an instructor for Ponderay's fly tying class every Saturday, and I am not kidding when I say I learn something new every class. Customers often show me different flies for various rivers, and how to fish specific holes.

Secret Confessions of a Fly Shop Manager

You would be amazed by how many times customers will come in and tell me their favorite fishing hole. It's like they are confessing their fishing sins to me:

"Forgive me, Dillon, for I have fished. I caught three 20 inch Cutthroat behind the big boulder in river X at 6pm yesterday using a size 16 Royal Wulff."

To which I respond, "I'll see you there tomorrow."

I love it when it when customers start with, "Can you keep a secret?" because they are about to tell me about an awesome hatch, fishing hole, or small creek I didn't know about. Out of respect, I do always keep my side of the bargain, and I take that information to the grave.
