Quick Tips: Fall Bass Fishing

Fall is a very busy time of year for anyone who loves the outdoors. Hunting is taking up everyone's time. I find a lot of people saying that they haven't had time to fish because they've been too busy hunting, myself included. The sad thing is that fishermen are missing out on a great opportunity to fish for bass.

Winter Feeding & Fishing Depth

The bass are feeding heavily to get ready for the winter when there is less forage. This is my favorite time of year to fish because there is little to no boat traffic and very little fishing pressure on these fish.

Need help dialing in the fishing depth? Check out these fish finders.

At first it may be hard to find what depth the fish are at but they should be in that 10-20 ft. range with some fish going shallower. I would recommend fishing suspended weed lines. A simple but very important topic when fishing weeds is to keep the lures you are fishing clean of weeds so you can present the lure in the fish's strike zone more often.

Lure & Bait Options for Fishing for  Fall Bass

Some lures that can have this presentation are crankbaits that dive just above the weed line, spinnerbaits, and punching jigs.

We've got all kinds of crankbaits, powerbaits and jigs online, right here.

With water temperatures cooling bass will not be as active so as they were in the summer because they are trying to conserve energy for winter. So I would start out by trying to locate fish by using lures that will produce a reaction strike such as a spinnerbait, swimbait, or crankbait. Color of lure depends on the body of water you are fishing.

Forage Bait or Bait Fish for Bass

You will want to match the forage or bait fish for the lake or water you are fishing. On Pend Oreille I would be fishing colors that match Kokanee, Perch, and Whitefish. The color also depends on the weather or time of day you are fishing. If you have any more questions on fishing come see us and we should be able to answer them!

Note: Remember while you are out there to be careful on the water with cooling temperatures falling in is a serious danger with hypothermia. Make sure to wear a PFD while operating the boat.
