Origins of North 40 Outfitters: AskNorth40

Why Did We Change our Name from Big R to North 40 Outfitters?

Over three years ago, the owners and the team at North 40 Outfitters revealed their new name to the Northwest. After 17 years doing business as Big R Stores, it was time to differentiate ourselves from other stores around the US that shared the Big R name.

By changing our name to North 40 Outfitters, we were able to alleviate confusion and say with confidence to all of our loyal customers online and on the ground, "This is our brand. This is who we are. Expect the best customer service and the extensive farm and ranch selection you deserve."

What Does North 40 Mean?

The term "North 40" is a phrase that takes its root from agriculture and dates back to the Homestead Act. Language of the time differentiated the Homesteader's land by 40 acre parcels coinciding with cardinal directions.

The name North 40 Outfitters pays homage to our company's deep agricultural roots, but we have developed into a company that is so much more. We pledge to operate with the integrity, to provide high quality products, and, as always, to continue to improve on our superior level of customer service. We pledge to remain viable and relevant to our customers in our stores and online. It's all North 40 no matter how you get here. We want you to know this simple fact: we're local people engaged with your community. Come in. Call us we have the local and regional knowledge you need to get outfitted for work or play.

When we made the change, we interviewed some of our long time customers to see how they felt about it; listen to what they had to say.

For those of you who are new to the family, here's what North 40 is to us.

North 40 Outfitters is a Farm Store

What's a farm store to you? Farm stores have served local communities for more than a century, and at one time what local communities needed was feed for their livestock, shovels to move the ground, and tools to keep their tractors and trucks running. Our local communities still need all those things today, and so we are going to be sure to give them the very best solutions for those very same needs. However, local communities have asked for even more from their farm stores. Work has evolved and will continue to evolve, and so has play. Our farm stores have evolved to be local product solution hubs that serve our communities work and play needs.

If you ask us about our biggest fear. It would be to make sure that we never get too big or move too fast to understand, research, and be involved with the local communities we serve. We are very proud to be in every location that we are in, and we are constantly working to be more engaged and more knowledgeable about the work and play needs of each community. They are all very different, so we don't believe it works to treat them all the same.

What can you expect in the future?

We live in one of the most amazing places in the world; The Northwest. While we understand that it is a place where hardworking people need products that can keep up with them, it is also a place where people play just as hard. We need products that can keep up with us "off the clock" when we are in the mountains, chasing elk, or swinging steelhead. We will continue to evolve and give our customers the best products for both work & play here in the Northwest.

Thanks again for all of your support.
