Omak Lake Report 11.4.16

I've been wanting to get up to Omak Lake lately, so I was able to slip away this morning for a couple of hours for some water time.

It was a bit chilly, but not that bad. There was fog hanging just above the lake when I got there, but the lake looked nice and calm with a little gentle wave action. I was shore fishing it this morning, but I had a feeling that was going to be just right.

After about my 3rd cast, my reward was a scrappy 14" Lahontan cutthroat. I was getting plenty of action from the fish in the 14"-16" range for the next 45 minutes. As I was taking a break, I heard a loud splash just over from me. Keeping still and not moving, I scanned the water and spotted what had made to commotion. What I saw was a stocky Lahontan cruising the shallows. Once I started looking harder, I could see others in the area. Then I saw what they were up to as one of them darted in chasing after a a small school of minnows. I switched to a small minnow pattern and a few casts later, I had a nice 20" giving me a run.

I worked up the shoreline having plenty of action. I got to the dock and figured I would give the deeper water a try. It was a repeat of what I had been having earlier from the shore. I switched to a black Zonker and picked up a few more nice Lahontans.

As the day went by, I saw a couple other gentlemen I know from the Methow Fly club. They were working the east side from a boat and picking a few up now and then. Watching them, I wish I had brought with me my intermediate line.

Anyway, if you are not fishing Omak Lake right now, you should be.
