Omak Lake Fishing Report 11.12.14

With the Okanogan river flowing over 1800cfs and the Methow blown out as well I decided to enlist my best bud Matt Featherly (North 40 Archery Lead, Omak WA) to go catch some fish at Omak Lake. Arriving at Omak early in the morning the wind was blowing out on the lake sending in some nice rollers to the bank, but with the mountains shielding us, the conditions were perfect. We had multiple hookups right off the bat and the morning was going great!
Our choice fly for the day was one our very own Keith Roe tied, barred white bunny streamer. Another fly that worked well was the sculpzilla in the olive color. Matt had multiple hookups with some fish ranging from 18-20 inches running a floating line with a 9 foot leader. I chose to use a type 8 sink tip at the end of my floating line and 7 foot leader. We had several short strikes on the flies, so tying in a stinger hook is a must. The fish didn't hit the fly too hard but once hooked they took off like little steelhead throwing themselves everywhere, including going airborne.
Overall the morning was awesome and all of this action concluded before 10 a.m. so Matt could clock in at the store on time. With having the rest of the day off I chose to run home and grab some more fly gear and head to the Columbia were the word was they released a total of some 20,000 rainbows into the system. The investigation will continue....
So if you are in need of that tug on the end of your line make sure to check out Omak lake before it gets to cold out, it will also help to come in and get outfitted with some flies for the lake and the right sink tip for your rod. Ask us about the different locations to better your chances and make sure to enjoy a nice fresh cup of Blue Star roasted coffee that’s goes along perfectly with any fish story!
Until next time, fish hard, fish often, and connect with the outdoors.
