When you think of rodeo, you probably think saddle bronc, bulls and barrel racers. But there is another type of rodeo we support at North 40 Outfitters, and that's the ranch rodeo. What is ranch rodeo? It's a rodeo where a team of ranch-hands compete in events based around real ranch work.
Events like team branding where two opposing teams are put on the clock with a herd of calves in the ring. One cowboy is horseback and heels a marked calf (only both feet count as a "catch"), the calf is pulled past a chalk line where two more hands steady the calf and the fourth uses a hot iron (white paint) to brand the calf.
When I showed up to the local ranch rodeo sponsored by North 40 Outfitters, I was one of those under the impression that a rodeo is a rodeo is a rodeo. I took my two boys to the N40 Ranch Rodeo on Saturday because it started at 1030 in the morning.
It's much easier to take a family to a day event than it is to get them through a rodeo that starts at 7 PM. My three-year old is not pictured, because he was glued to the fence watching the team events with Jake, our photographer. At this ranch rodeo, there were eight teams from all around Montana competing in four events: bronc riding (different because the rider has a normal saddle and must hold both lariat and lead rope), team sorting, team doctoring and team branding events relatable to real world ranch activities.
North 40 Outfitters was the title sponsor for the ranch rodeo in Great Falls last year. The sense of fraternal competition between ranches this is something we would truly enjoyed and we are happy to foster again this year.
North 40 Ranch Rodeo Events And Registration Information
The third annual North 40 Ranch Rodeo will be coming to Great Falls Saturday, January 13th at 10:30 am in the Montana Expo Park 4 Seasons Arena. It will be held in conjunction with the 39th Annual Montana PRCA Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals. The North 40 Ranch Rodeo on Saturday the 13th, will feature teams of true ranch cowboys from across Montana demonstrating the true form of daily ranch work chores. Events in the ranch rodeo will include ranch bronc riding, team trailering, team branding and team doctoring.
Each team consist of 4 people with the number of teams being limited to 10. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $10 starting at noon, Saturday morning, January 13, 2018 at Montana ExpoPark Four Seasons Arena. Kids 10 and under get in free with North 40 Back Patch available at local North 40 Store.
