Mo Report 10.21.14
We spent the weekend camped on the lower Missouri but fished the canyon section from Dearborn down to Cascade pretty thoroughly. The hot weather was not ideal for swinging streamers but we did catch a few, and as soon as this weather gets back to normal it should be game on. We did catch a few good fish on the swing and a number of home brewed swing patterns, as well as any of Ish’s swing patterns (which we have a big selection of in the bins) were producing. Some of the best swing patterns in the bins include Ish’s swinger cray, Ish’s Kool Herc, and Ish’s Grand Master Flash. The weeds have mostly exited the river except in the back eddies but the faster runs are mostly weed free, especially compared to even just a few weeks ago.
Fish were chasing the stripped streamer out of the boat. There is a mixture of BWO’s and Caddis hatching pretty much all day long, and fish were up eating them all day (except for a few gusty hours of wind). BIG NEWS- There are a significant amount of October Caddis hatching; especially on the lower river, and especially in the evenings. So bring the big orange bugs that you rarely get to bust out to the Mo this week. We even saw a few fish grabbing them late in the day. The hot weather has delayed the system a little bit this year so be ready in the next few weeks- the forecast doesn’t show it cooling off real fast but even 10 degrees with cooler night time temps will help get the fish aggressive this fall.
Stop in the shop and wish Denver farewell as he will be working to transition over to our new upcoming Couer d’Alene shop. Fred is back in town and fished with us this week on the Mo. He will need a few days to re-coop his 48 crusade down from Alaska but will be back in the rotation sometime later this week or next in the shop.
