Missouri River Report 7.15.16

This week on the Missouri River, there were Caddis, PMD’s, Caddis, PED’s, Caddis, Trico’s and Caddis.
One of the things I love about being in the fly shop is hearing about peoples successes on the river. Unless, of course, one of my friends is telling me I should have been there. The other day was one of those days.
I heard reports of big trico spinner falls in the morning. There must have been a major emergence of multiple caddis throughout the day. A guy just came in and grabbed a handful of olive sparkle pupas. He said fish were crushing it on the lift the other day. I love that.
My friend Kevin reported that the evening was magic. There were fish up everywhere he said. In the eddies, on the seams, throughout the mid river hydraulics, and along the banks. Tricos were emerging around six. *PED’s came off heavy about seven. We were covered in Caddis he said. Tan ones, brown ones, olive ones and black ones. There were Little Sister Sedges and Spotted Sedges and Traveling Sedges. The Nectopsyche that anglers often call White Millers were thick.
Kevin said they got eats fishing a Cluster Midge to the Trico eaters. They got fish on low riding spent caddis. They got fish on PMD emergers. When the light got tough, a #14 Purple Haze got it done.
Current flows have been holding fairly steady just over 4200 cfs. The temps have been in the low 60s. We’ve had some cooler summer days and some rain recently. We’ve got prime time conditions right now.

Another guy just called in to tell me how the Caddis and PMD hatch was legendary the other day. Guess I should have been there. Just realize that this is a fishing report. It already happened. It may not be the same tonight or tomorrow. I will be on the river today, so don’t expect much to be happening.

*From a match the hatch perspective, PED’s or Pale Evening duns are basically the same as PMD’s or Pale Morning Duns. I like Mercer’s Poxyback Emerger or a low riding dun.
