Idaho fishing report 12.21.17

Hey, guys fishing has been solid on our trout rivers as of late.  The Lochsa, Northfork and Selway are all in great summer shape and hatches are popping.  The weather has turned warm so start thinking summer mode.  Beat the heat by getting on the water early and taking a break middle of the day.  Take advantage of the late fishing too.

The caddis and pale evening dun hatches in the late afternoon are solid and consistent. The Grande Ronde and Snake are fishing great. I had a gentleman come in last week and said he was catching some real dandies on the Ronde and in good quantity. The clearwater steelhead are coming. Numbers over the dam are increasing over the dam, water temperature is cool and ready.

Lochsa, Selway, NF Clearwater River

Flows are steady with consistent fishing. Dries are great in the early morning when temps are cooler. Try Streamers when it starts to heat up or swing some soft hackle flies. Keep an eye on some big rocks and structures where the trout will be holding. Terrestrials like hoppers and ants are out and about. A lot of reports saying Adams, Caddis, and Purple Haze have been producing some nice fish.

Snake, Grande Ronde Rivers

Bass fishing reports on the Ronde and Snake have been great. People have been catching some monsters out there right in our backyard.  Try a wide variety of streamers like whooly buggers, and Mini Dungeons in a variety of colors. Trout are going to be moving upstream when the temperature rises so if you want trout head to cooler waters towards Oregon. Focus on the Ronde below Troy Oregon for Bass. Lots of carp in any of the boat ramps or along slow-moving stretches of water in the Snake. With carp, it’s a patient’s game, red blood worms for below the surface and any foam flies such as Hippie Stompers for dry flies. Carp will eat in straight lines so casting in front of them and slow stripping it back will be best. Get out there and have a blast!

Clearwater River

Flows are at 1270 CFS and temps are right for Steelhead to be moving in. Counts are on the rise at 40 to 50 fish a day. As of July 21, total count at Bonneville was 15,573 steelhead, and at Lower Granite 403 have come over so far. Usually, the steelhead will sit in the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater river for a bit before going on. Size 06 and 08 natural color flies for steelhead.

Bass fishing is lenient at the confluence, anything past the Clearwater Mill is far and few between. Early morning and later evenings white fish and a few smolts will rise to dries. Any green mayflies will work if you want to target them. Lots of carp in any of the boat ramps or along slow-moving stretches of water. With carp it’s a patient’s game, red blood worms for below the surface and any foam flies such as Hippie Stompers for dry flies. Carp will eat in straight lines so casting in front of them and slow stripping it back will be best. Get out there and have a blast!
