Leader Lake Report 5.2.16

After taking care of a few things in the shop yesterday, Luke and I were able to slip away for a few hours. We ran up to Leader Lake to see if we could find few of the 4lb Largemouth that we had been getting reports on from the lake. Leader Lake is a year round lake under the general fishing rules. Which means its open to all styles of fishing.

Since it was a Sunday, there was a few other people on the lake and most of the camping sites were occupied. We rigged up and launched the boat and headed to the opposite side of the lake where I had some success before. We had a little action on the Low fat Minnow tied in a Bluegill color, but nothing of any real size.

We moved to another location and had about the same results. Luke switched over to a Kreelex fly that I had tied up and started getting more action. Again, nothing of size that we had been told about. I switched to the same Kreelex fly and was picking up smaller bass but the biggest was about ¾ of a lb. Besides the small largemouths, we also had a few rainbows that liked the same fly. Even though the day was a warm and clear one, the wind kept popping up and we would have to re-adjust our location sometimes.

Anytime I fish with Luke, there is a lot of laughs to be had. He hooked into one real nice fish when he was not paying a lot of attention to what was going on and promptly lost it. Luke's reaction could only be described as true bass fisherman's rant. The one fish that went crazy for that fly was the large bluegills. We landed about a dozen and a half that were bigger than our open hand.

The bright sunny day did not help with the search for those bigger bass. The best time for them would be first thing in the morning and after the sun gets low toward evening. Even though we did not find the big ones, it was a great afternoon as it should be when ever you get to go fishing with a friend.
