Lake Pend O'reille Report 6.1.16

Smallmouth

With the recent warm weather, I knew the Smallmouth Bass fishing would be awesome to say the least. The forecast called for a maximum of 5 mph wind, and 70 degree weather. Check Out Current Water Temps & Flows Here. Simply a perfect day to troll for Kokanee, and fly fish for bass. I trolled Garfield Bay for a couple hours along the shoreline with consistent Kokanee action. The fish were never deeper than 20 feet, and seemed to be hungry the duration I was there. It was never hot and heavy, but enough action to keep someone interested. I eventually caught my limit of healthy Kokanee, and was already thinking of the soon delicious dinners to come.

Points Just Outside the Bay...

Immediately after I caught my last Kokanee, I pieced together my Sage Approach, and made a run for the points just outside the bay. In the two hours of fly fishing, I caught between 15-20 hard hitting Smallmouth. Nothing bigger than 2 pounds, but still aggressive hard fighting Smallies. As I fished my way back to the boat launch, I caught several fun Smallmouth under docks in 5 feet of water. This is when I had the chance to watch these predators anxiously follow my fly, and strike with authority.  Want to try out some flies? Check them out here! It is amazing how many bass hang out in the shadows underneath docks and boats only to appear when food is on the table.

As you can imagine, I was probably the only person on the lake fly fishing for bass. If you are in the Sandpoint area,  take advantage of this incredible fishery we have in our front yard. Stop by the fly shop anytime, and I will show you how and where to catch these bass.
