Great Falls, Montana Fishing Report 07.11.19

montana fishing report 12.15.17

We have been getting pounded almost daily by thunderstorms lately.  There have been some great dry fly sessions before and after the storms for those brave souls willing to be out there.  Caddis get really active after the rain quits.  This coming week, we are heating up and drying out.  Expect some great opportunities.

Current Conditions

Missouri River below Holter Dam - The Missouri River is above 5K again.  We really like the current flows, but it would be nice if they could keep the river consistent for a while.  Pmds and caddis are hatching daily along with yellow sally’s, callibaetis, and a few other mayflies.  Fishing before sunrise or after sunset can yield great results.  During the day, pmd spinner falls, hatching pmds and hatching caddis can bring some fish to the top.  They are spooky right now, so make your approach to rising fish extra stealthy.  Nymphing with #16 caddis pupa and #14-#18 mayfly nymphs has been reliable. In the evening, the caddis and some peds have been generating great surface activity is some river reaches.

Creeks and Smaller Rivers - Most waters are fishing well, but some stream flows have been affected by rainfall following storms.  We expect flows to fall rapidly this coming week and some great opportunities for rising fish should unfold.  Hopefully, we won’t stay hot for too long.

Ponds and Reservoirs - When the weather gets warm, the fish go deeper.  Fish early and late. Damsels, callibaetis, water boatmen, leeches, minnows and crayfish can all be on the menu. It’s a good time of year for a float tube or a boat. In some bodies of water, the fish will be 10 to 25 feet deep by late morning.

Smith River near Eden, MT - Rains have kept the flows up and the fishing has been excellent. Sounds like cicada’s are out this year.  If you have a permitted trip planned, check out our Guide to floating the Smith River. Then stop in for your supplies.  We’ve got you covered with camping gear, bear fence, and bear approved coolers.

Pike - We sold out on some of our favorite pike flies.  Fear not! We are restocked and have some new players.  If you want to chase the water wolf, come check us out and talk to Nathan.  He’s been on pike every week.

Match the Hatch

Caddis are becoming a major player on the Mo.  We love our Fly Project hi-vis spent caddis.  Fish it by itself or double it up with a mayfly or caddis emerger.
