Runoff is Coming

Snowpack readings this past week reflected 113-127 percent of normal for the Sun, Missouri, and Smith River drainages.  We have not experienced any really warm weather yet, so expect waters to be rising as we begin warming into the coming week.

Ponds and Reservoirs

If you don’t have a boat, now is the best time of the year for shoreside success.  Water temperatures have been cool and spawning cycles are running a couple of weeks behind normal.  Fish are still cruising near shorelines. You’ll want to arm yourself with several colors of balanced leeches, some red chironomids, and a couple of jigged hare’s ear and pheasant tails.

Creeks and Smaller Rivers

The creeks and smaller river have been hit and miss depending on weather and runoff. That being said, a couple of creeks have been producing really well lately.  They are small and can’t take a ton of pressure, so you’ll need to come by and ask for the local’s report.

Missouri River below Holter Dam

Good news! Flows just dropped to the 9K range.  May nymphing gets better and better and at these flows, we expect more fish looking up for bwos and March browns.  As is typical for the season, the upper river is best for nymphing, with the lower stretches providing better streamer and dry fly action.  Now is the time to fish the big streamer for hungry browns.  Sometimes, they won’t even bother with the little stuff.  May is arguably the best month for streamer action.

Missouri River below Morony Dam

There are toothy critters roaming the Missouri River. From pike to walleye to the lowly Goldeye, anglers can have fun with a variety of fish on a variety of streamer flies.  There are also soft mouth critters that will put a serious bend in your rod.  Carp are seeking out the sloughs.  Bass and drum are tight to the river edges and catfish are lurking in the deeper runs.

Smith River

If you have a permitted trip planned this spring, check out our Guide to floating the Smith River. Then stop in for your flies and supplies.  We’ve got you covered with camping gear, bear fence, and bear approved coolers.
