DIY: Burlap Treat Bags for Halloween

by Gretchen Bundy
Autumn brings sweater weather, colorful leaves, and one of my favorite holidays -- Halloween. I love the magic and fantasy that comes with the holiday, and most of all, I love the candy!
With this DIY from North 40 Outfitters, you can combine all your favorite Halloween or autumn themes into a cute (or spooky) DIY treat bag. All you need is burlap and a few simple materials to get started.
Materials You'll Need for DIY Halloween Burlap Treat Bags
- Burlap
- Scissors
- Cardstock
- Paintbrush
- Acrylic paint
- Halloween or autumn images
- Leather cords or twine
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
Instructions for Making your DIY Burlap Bag
1. Cut the burlap into two 5" x 7" rectangles (you can go smaller or bigger if you wish). Do a quick iron before cutting if the burlap is extremely wrinkled. If you're making multiple bags, cutting a template out of cardstock helps speed up the process.
2. Place two rectangles together. Using a sewing machine, or by hand, sew 3 sides to form a bag, leaving one of the shorter ends open. Turn the bag inside out for painting.
3. Cut a template out of cardstock (find free images online) or go ahead and use your imagination and paint freehand. Remember to put a piece of paper in the bag before painting, so the front and back don't get stuck together. You can also use felt, googly-eyes, thread, or buttons to add a bit of charm and character.
4. Let the paint dry, remove paper from bag, and add candy. Tie the top up with ribbon or a leather strip, and you're good to go!
As you can see below, you can make just about anything! And kids (or anyone with a sweet tooth) love them too. Show us your completed bags and tag us @north40outfitters (On Instagram or Pinterest) so we can share your craftiness!
