Your Favorite Hidey-Hole

Fly Anglers: it's time to wander your favorite hidey-hole creeks in central Washington - before it’s too late! I took a walk along one of my favorite tributary on Sunday and found some hard-fighting Westslope Cutts still around.

As you all know, fly fishing is not rocket science on many of our small streams: that's what's so great, right? Equipped with some old faithful patterns like Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulators, Humpies and Adams, you can often bet you'll come eye to eye with one of these beautiful fish. That is, unless you're fishing this little Eastern Cascade gurgler...

I try to hit this stream before the 4th of July every year because of the peaceful scenery and larger (smarter) than average Cutts. The experience of serenity never disappoints but, sometimes the fish do....This year, I finally duped a couple by tweaking some old-faithful patterns around a bit.

Only Mr. Cutt knows

The first fish took a tiny (18?) Elk Hair Caddis trailing behind an age old Joe's Hopper. Since I couldn't see the caddis, I figured I'd offer a meal I could see. Why smack the tiny meal with such a juicy protein nugget only inches away? Only Mr. Cutt knows.

The second took a skated/stripped Stimulator. This after not lifting a fin while the same fly dead-drifted by a few times first....Why? Only Mr. Cutt knows...

If you also get a hankering to stroll along your favorite mini-waters, drop by the Omak shop and pick up a few dozen "Old Faithfuls": and maybe some new patterns too.  If they don't work at first, tweak the presentation a little...who knows? (Mr. Cutt does...) Warm weather and low flows will surely slow our Central WA creeks down soon, so get out there!
