Killing Weeds: Best Practices for Applying Weed Killer

You just bought weed killer, and now you want apply it. Awesome.
But, did you know if you apply your weed killer at the wrong time, the weeds will live, and you'll need to buy more weed killer.
Also, applying weed killer incorrectly could also result in brown patches burned into your lawn.
Sound scary? Don't worry, we've got some simple steps to help you get the most out of your herbicide.
Note: Make sure you know how to identify your weeds so you can choose the right product, and then, make sure you chose the best herbicide based on what type of weeds you have.
1. Time your Application- By checking for rain!
Most liquid application herbicides have a surfactant already in place- this is a chemical that will help it stick to the foliage of the weed you are trying to kill. However, even with that chemical bonder in place, your weed killer could be wasted if you time your application wrong.
There's a good rule of thumb when deciding WHEN to apply your herbicide: at least five hours of rain-free time is needed for the greatest efficacy of your spray. So when you're trying to kill weeds, make sure you check the weather.
2. Spray Right & Avoid Extreme Temperatures
The chemicals used to kill weeds- need to be placed ON the weeds. The more foliage there is for the weed to uptake the chemical, the more effective it is going to be in the eradication of that sore sport in your lawn.
So don't mow before you spray! Let the weeds get a big, then give them the hose you can select your spray options from our online catalog here.
Also, you need to pay attention to daytime temperatures. If it's too cold the chemicals won't make their way to the root of the problem- and if it's too hot those chemicals will make their way TOO far into your lawn, and you'll end up with burning the grass around the weed.
Don't use herbicides if the expected temperature is going to exceed 85 degrees.
3. MIX WEED KILLER TO LABEL!!
While both of the former topics are important to successfully managing your broadleaf or grassy weed problem- there is one thing that will burn your lawn up no matter what you do, and we alluded to it in the intro that's mixing atomic grade levels of herbicide.
In the video below, they call it "the glug-glug effect," and it impacts everyone. If the label says 1 teaspoon and you use a quarter gallon- you're going to annihilate your yard no matter what time you apply.
