31 Mare Moods: A Review of Silver Lining Herbs Horse Supplement

I have owned my mare, Chopaka War Jet, for 18 years. She has always been fractious and a kicker. She stands in the pasture and kicks the fence, the feeders, other horses, the air-. I three way hobble her in the horse trailer.
I have learned how to be around her, and she knows what will absolutely not be tolerated by me. Don't get me wrong, she is easy to catch, will do anything under saddle that I ask. She is as comfortable as an old cowgirl boot, she just has a few issues--but I'm alright with that.
Besides, all the good ones have some idiosyncrasies, right?
Your Mare has a Reputation as being "Ornery"? Blame the Estrus
Over the years I have received much unsolicited, well-meaning and sometimes insensitive comments from fellow horse people.
Though solutions ranged from downright cruel "training" devices, placing a marble in her uterus, spaying, acupuncture and massage, they had one thing in common - all folks blame her estrus cycle to explain her need to kick everything in sight.
Do you know the best way to keep ticks of your horse?
There is no difference in how she behaves when she's in heat and when she isn't, which is why spaying and the marble trick aren't viable solutions. Â And, yes, I really do know when she is in heat.
Supplements for Cranky Mares: Silver Lining Mare Moods
I have tried many supplements so when someone mentioned Silver Lining Mare Moods, I smiled politely, said thank you and never gave it another thought. I happened to see it on a shelf at a local retailer. Since I wasn't currently trying anything, I picked up the bag and started to read:
- Poor haulers <- YES Absolutely!
- Helping maintain a normal disposition, whether in season or not <- Was this created just for Chopaka?
- Hard and too-frequent cycles <- oh yeah-. Here it is. *sigh* blame the estrus cycle.
However, the second bullet point was too encouraging to let go.
Dosing with Silver Linings and the Personality Shift in my Mare
I read the dosage instructions: 1 level scoop per day for 1000-1200 lb. horse. There are approximately 60 scoops per bag. So that meant, a two month supply for about a dollar day. I've tried more expensive remedies, and a small scoop in her oats seemed easy enough.
The change was subtle... she just seemed "normal." My daughter and I barrel race and take her on many mountain rides and I noticed that she was responsive and never lost her edge, but what WAS different was that she wasn't so angry all the time.

The other horses, not willing to be lulled into a false sense of security, still let her have first choice of what feeder to eat at. I still three way hobble her in the trailer even though I wonder if it's necessary. 18 years, and many replaced windows later, have got me to thinking like those other horses, "Better safe than sorry."
But overall, the change after feeding Silver Lining Mare Moods is pretty remarkable. I'm a huge fan!
I am super excited that we now carry this product at North 40. In fact we carry all the products in the Silver Lining Herbs top list for the Northwest.
