27th Annual Captn's Table Derby

This year was the 27th annual Captn’s Table Derby on Lake Pend Oreille. We have fished this derby for the last 7 years and this year some really big fish took the top placements. We had 360 anglers register for the derby this year and lake conditions were a just about right for the fishing.
The first day started out a little slow with calm water and rainy conditions. The wind picked up a little and the fish started to eat around 11:00am. The first day a few fish were weighed in with the biggest, caught by David Gillespie, at 22lbs. We managed to pick up 7 or 8 fish with the biggest being a little over 15lbs.
The second day we got on the water an hour a later to a 5-6 foot chop. We managed to work our way across the lake to the fishing grounds and conditions continued to improve throughout the day. We started off the day with a few fish right out of the gate with nothing big to show for it. We stayed after it all day and caught a few more fish, but nothing worth weighing in.
Overall, I would say that fishing was tough for most during this derby. The few fish that were weighed in were big, but there weren't many fish weighed in at all.
Final Standings:
Rainbow Division
- 1st Place: Roger Blackstone 26lbs
- 2nd Place: David Gillespie 22lbs
- 3rd Place: Mark Hall 21lbs
I did get out and fish a day before the derby with my wife, Camille and our two boys. Camille ended up catching a fish pushing 20lbs right away. Landon caught a nice lake trout and his biggest fish to date, a rainbow over 15lbs.
